Winter aid for children in Ukraine

by Tessa Page

Constant air raids, bitter cold, an uncertain future: childhood in Ukraine means a state of emergency. Children in the east and south in particular are constantly coming under attack. In the second winter of war, over four million children need humanitarian aid. Many live in dwellings that do not adequately protect them from the cold. We support them with UNICEF:

  • By supplying winter clothing and blankets.
  • In safe places where they can learn and play.
  • With generators to heat hospitals.

Shelters offer little protection

Oleksandra (above) had to flee to Irpin with her family to escape the fighting. However, their new home was completely burnt out and the family has hardly any money left. Now there are five of them living in one small room. The cold, damp and the ongoing war are taking their toll on the three siblings.

The destruction is immense

Countless houses, schools and hospitals have been destroyed since the war began. Millions of families with children have fled and now have to survive the winter in emergency shelters or damaged buildings. Babies and small children in particular are at risk of hypothermia and respiratory diseases.

Together with UNICEF, we are helping to protect children in Ukraine from freezing temperatures and provide them with vital relief supplies.
